A process defined by care, precision and uncompromising standards.

As we set out to create Mita’s first collection, we committed to a process of rigour and refinement, with the aim of meeting, and wherever possible exceeding, the highest industry benchmarks. Over 12 months, we refined our patterns and examined every detail in depth. From fabric composition to laundering, each aspect was thoroughly considered and meticulously developed in Melbourne.

Fabric Production

Working closely with our fabric mill, we developed a composition and treatment that balances weight with sensory softness. Our goal was to achieve the structure of a woven fabric or worsted wool, while offering a softer hand feel and gentle stretch for sensory comfort and unrestricted movement. We initially hoped to work exclusively with natural fibres, but the need for robust laundering performance (essential in assisted living environments) steered us away from options like wool, leading us to an FSC Certified Viscose blend.

Sampling & Testing

We began our sampling process with The Social Studio, a social enterprise that creates training and employment opportunities for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Once we had laid the foundations through toiles and fabric prototypes, we moved to our manufacturing partner for a further six months of patterning and design development. In total, we completed five (and a half) rounds of sampling for each piece in the capsule. At every stage, we tested finishes, stitch types, trims and detailing to meet as many wearer needs as possible for our first range — one intended to become our core, permanent collection.

Laundry & Care

Through an industry-recommended commercial laundry, we conducted a dozen wash tests with lengths of our fabric to assess durability and shrinkage across the colour range, allowing for performance comparison and necessary allowances. We also twice laundered garment samples to understand behaviour post-wash/dry, adjusting patterns to balance length and refine finishes. This process has allowed us to provide informed garment care instructions and offer guidance on what to expect when garments are washed in harsher laundering conditions.

Commitment to Further Improvement

While we couldn’t resolve every challenge in this first collection, we recognise the pursuit of better solutions is ongoing. With each release, we will refine and improve — guided by wearer feedback, advancements in our own knowledge, and, hopefully, an expansion of the resources and support available to us.

Explored & Attempted Considerations We're Yet to Resolve Preliminary Solutions While We Keep Developing

All natural fibres in our fabric make-up (all natural compositions are more prone to shrinkage)

FSC Certified Viscose blend custom-milled, dyed and treated to our unique and specific requirements

Bulk fabric washing to completely pre-shrink prior to make (to our knowledge, not currently available in Australia)

We conducted more than a dozen wash tests to assess behaviour, durability and shrinkage

Binding or flat-felled seams and finishes (not recommended for stretch fabrics)

Clean, minimal seam finishes with deep facings and fusing for structure

Hidden magnetic button closures for easier fastening (the GSM of our fabric currently works against us)

Eliminated unnecessary hardware, retaining only a singular button on outerwear pieces for styling versatility

More easily removable brand labels to prevent irritation (cost-prohibitive for our first release)

Brand labels designed to be gentle against bare skin with a non-abrasive handle and attachment

From fabrication to finish, our garments are proudly made in Melbourne, Australia.

At our core, we believe in the importance of ethical fashion. We recognise the human cost embedded in the industry and feel a deep responsibility to meet standards that we can proudly stand behind. Producing locally has allowed us to foster strong, respectful relationships with our makers, ensuring that each piece is crafted with care in not only safe but supportive conditions.
